Are you someone who likes to have things in reach when you need them? Usually, the solution to that is to place them at convenient locations. And one of the best ways to do that is to provide surfaces or hooks on which you can put or hang your things. The best way to keep them attached to the wall is by using suction cups. But the real problem is, how to make suction a cup stick?
Anyone who has tried to keep a suction cup attached to a window or a wall knows the struggle of keeping them on. It could even lead to a bigger mess if the things that rely on the suction cup get scattered all over the room. High-quality suction cups can hold up to 20 pounds of weight and last a very long time. But if you don’t know how to attach them properly, they could easily unstick. That’s why we’ve prepared some tips for you on making the suction cup stick. Keep reading to learn more!
Choose the right surfaces
First of all, not all surfaces are suction-cup friendly. A suction cup works by creating a low-pressure region inside the cup itself. The outside atmospheric pressure will push on the suction area, making it stick to the surface it’s on. Pushing it down lets the air bubbles inside the cup escape and create a vacuum. However, the surface has to be flat and smooth for this to work. Porous surfaces, like metal or plastic gratings, won’t work as well. The best surfaces for suction cups are glass, tiles, fiberglass, or metal.
Keep them clean and dry
It is essential that both the surface and the cup are free from any dirt for them to stay stuck. That’s why you should clean both surfaces before attempting to stick the suction cup. Use rubbing alcohol on a window to degrease it if needed instead of using bathroom or window cleaners as they leave a residue. It is also best to use a soft lint-free cloth to avoid extra particles.
If the suction cups themselves are dirty, wash them with warm soapy water, rinse them off, and make sure to dry them properly. A dirty suction cup won’t stick, and an overly wet one won’t do as well. When both the surface and the cups are clean and dry, the chances of the cups sticking will be better.
Some people try to put some Vaseline or cooking oil on the rim of their suction cup. Others dampen their fingertips and rub them on the rim as well. A moist rim of the suction cup helps in creating a tighter seal for the vacuum. Just be careful to not add too much moisture — gently apply enough to only barely coat the surface for it to work.
Push the center of the suction cup firmly down towards the surface and keep pushing for at least fifteen seconds. Then, slowly release the pressure so that all the air bubbles may escape from the suction area. If a vacuum is successfully created, you’ll feel that the suction cup is firmly in place. Try to check if the cup tends to slide. If it does, then you’ve added too much moisture to the rim of the cup.
Sometimes, you may need to “burp” out extra air that may have seeped into the suction area of the cup. To do this, you simply need to press the center of the cup down again periodically.
Find consistent temperature
Temperature and humidity can affect how well a suction cup can stick. The ideal situation is if the surface and the suction cups are at the same temperatures and if that is close to room temperature. If you know your cups will experience changing temperature and humidity, it might now work as well. Try to look for a place where temperature changes are not common. Also, avoid trying to stick suction cups when you know the surface is too cold, like on a car window in winter.
Although you now know how to make a suction cup stick, you should still act on the side of caution and avoid relying on them too much. Don’t place fragile items on surfaces supported by suction cups. You never know when it could give in and shatter all your things on the floor!
